Yellow urad dal, also known as split black gram without skin, is one of the most loved comfort foods in Indian homes. It’s light, healthy, and full of protein. This dal tastes amazing with steamed rice or roti and is often flavored with a simple ghee tadka (tempering).
Ingredients:
- 1 cup yellow urad dal (split black gram)
- 3 cups water
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1 tomato (chopped)
- 2–3 garlic cloves (crushed)
- 1 inch ginger (grated)
- 1–2 green chilies (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Wash the urad dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 20 minutes.
- In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, turmeric powder, salt, and 3 cups of water. Cook for 3–4 whistles until soft.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until golden brown.
- Add tomatoes and cook until they soften and oil starts to separate.
- Now add red chili powder and cooked dal to the pan. Mix well and simmer for 5 minutes on low flame.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
Tips:
- Adjust the thickness of the dal by adding more water if needed.
- You can add a spoon of ghee on top before serving for extra flavor.
- For a tangy taste, add a few drops of lemon juice before serving.
